There are a total of 174 universities in Bangladesh; among them, 58 are public universities. In public universities, students can complete undergraduate and postgraduate degrees with very low tuition fees, as most of the costs are covered by the government.
But to study in these universities, students must pass a highly competitive admission test. One of the toughest exams in Bangladesh is the public university admission test. In 2020, due to COVID-19, 20 public universities decided to hold a combined admission test. In 2021, two more universities joined this process.
The GST Admission Test 2026 is expected to be held in mid-March 2026. Usually, the GST admission test is organized within 3 to 4 months after the publication of HSC results. The HSC 20235 results were published in November 2025.
This year, 1,067,852 students passed the Higher Secondary level, but public university seats are limited. Around 64,000 students get the chance to study at public universities. Among them, the total number of seats under GST is about 23,104.
This makes GST one of the largest admission tests in terms of seat capacity. Out of these, 12,076 seats are for Science students, 7,294 for Humanities, and 4,636 for Commerce students.

Eligibility Requirements for GST Admission Test 2026
Like every other competitive exam, Dhaka University, Bangladesh University of Science and Technology (BUET), other engineering universities, Rajshahi University, Chittagong University, and others, GST also have specific requirements. The first condition is that a student must pass the HSC exam. Students are also allowed to apply for the second time.
For GST 2026, students must have passed SSC in 2022 or 2023 and HSC in 2025 or 2024.
- Science Group: Students must have a combined GPA of 8.00 in SSC or Dhakil and HSC or Alim, with at least 3.50 in each exam, including the fourth subject.
- Humanities Group: Students must have a total GPA of 6.00, with at least 3.00 in each exam, including the fourth subject.
- Commerce Group: Students must have a total GPA of 6.50, with at least 3.00 in both SSC and HSC, including the fourth subject.

GST Admission Exam Pattern & Mark Distribution
Every admission test has a mark distribution, and GST is no exception. The exam is held in MCQ format, with a total of 100 questions. The exam duration is 60 minutes (1 hour), giving about 1.45 minutes per question. The mark distribution is basically the same as Dhaka University, Rajshahi University, Comilla University, Jahangirnagar University, Chittagong University, and other general universities.
A unit mark distribution is the same as the Bangladesh Maritime University and Engineering University admission test.

Every question is for 1 mark, and answering 4 answers wrong will cut 1 mark. That means the GST exam also has negative marking like Dhaka University, Bangladesh University of Professionals (BUP), Rajshahi University, and Chittagong University. Almost every university admission has a negative marking system.

The GST admission test is conducted under a combined system of 24 universities; it started in 2020 during Covid-19. That is why it is called the Combined University Admission Test. But in 2025, 5 universities got back from the GST admission test system and started to take admission separately as they did previously and now it has only 19 universities.
