Among the leading public universities, Dhaka University, Rajshahi University, Chittagong University, Jahangirnagar University, BUP, and so on always stay at the top of students’ preferences.

These institutions are often seen as dream destinations for students across the nation. Alongside these general universities, Bangladesh also has specialized universities that hold a unique place in the hearts of students, especially those from the science background.

Among these, the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) stands as the ultimate dream for thousands of engineering aspirants. Any reputed medical or dental college for medical aspirants. Students work tirelessly, often through sleepless nights, to secure a place at BUET, CUET, KUET, RUET, or DUET, as well as in the country’s top medical and dental colleges.

Every year, thousands compete in what is often called the “admission war,” but only a handful succeed. In addition to BUET, students from science backgrounds also prioritize doing their dream engineering at various universities and institutes. Here are some of them:

  • Chittagong University of Engineering & Technology (CUET)
  • Khulna University of Engineering & Technology (KUET)
  • Rajshahi University of Engineering & Technology (RUET)
  • Military Institute of Science & Technology (MIST), under Bangladesh University of Professionals (BUP)
  • Bangladesh Maritime University
  • Science and Technology Universities under the GST admission system

BUET Admission Test System 2026

Earlier, we looked at the important dates for the BUET admission test. Now, let’s explore the unique admission process of BUET, which is different from most other public universities in Bangladesh.

Unlike general public universities, where almost all applicants can sit for the exam after the primary application, BUET follows a strict screening process. Every year, nearly one lakh students apply. From these, about 18,000 students are shortlisted for the preliminary test, and then 6,000 top candidates are selected for the final written exam. Rajshahi University admission also follows these rules.

This makes the BUET admission test one of the toughest exams in Bangladesh. The official BUET Admission Circular 2026 explains all steps in detail.

BUET Admission Eligibility Criteria 2026

To apply for BUET, you must meet strict academic requirements:

  • Students must pass SSC/equivalent in 2020 or 2021 and HSC/equivalent in 2023.
  • In SSC, you need a minimum GPA of 4.00 with a GPA of 5.00 in math, physics, and chemistry.
  • In HSC, one must score a GPA of 5.00 in total and also in higher math, physics, and chemistry.
  • Students with revised HSC results after April 25, 2023, must meet stricter subject-specific marks (170/200 in Math and 372/400 in Physics & Chemistry).

Second-time admission attempts are not allowed in BUET, like Dhaka University and other engineering universities, but a second time is available in the medical admission test, dental admission test, nursing admission test, and various science and technology university admission tests.

For indigenous students, BUET offers separate quotas if they meet the minimum requirements. Only the top 18,000 eligible applicants get a chance to sit for the preliminary test.
